My Practice
I'm Avizia Long, a Lafayette-based ceramic artist and the founder of Weenies, Plants, and Pots. My practice is rooted in slow making, play, and close attention to process. I'm drawn to clay for its responsiveness and honesty - every touch leaves a record, and every piece carries the history of how it was made.
Beginnings and Teaching
I began working with clay at the Pottery Studio of the Art Museum of Greater Lafayette, where I still teach today. Teaching has deeply shaped my studio practice, reinforcing the value of experimentation, patience, and learning through doing. The studio remains a place of continual problem-solving, discovery, and quiet focus.
Studio Process
I work using a combination of wheel-thrown and handbuilt techniques, often moving between functional forms and small sculptural objects. I'm interested in the space where utility meets character - where a mug, planter, or figurines can be both useful and expressive. Surface, glaze, and form are developed slowly through testing and repetition, allowing each piece to evolve through the making process.
Why I Make
My work embraces variation and imperfection as evidence of the hand. Rather than aiming for uniformity, I'm interested in building collections that feel cohesive but alive, shaped by process, material, and time.
